No matter what you call it, “alternative movie posters,” “fan art,” “tribute art,” etc. fans of film and pop culture in general are craving everything and anything poster related that has to do with their favorite properties. (Trust me, I’m as addicted as the next person, my flat files runeth-over with pure awesomeness just waiting to be framed.)
Eileen Steinbach, aka SG Posters, is a graphic designer from Germany who is part of this movement and her latest series of prints has caused quite a disturbance in “The Force.” No, they are not Star Wars related but they do deal the age old questions of “What’s out there?” and “Are we alone in the vast expanse of space?“
For her new series of alternative movie posters, she opted to go with three outstanding science fiction films: “Contact,” “Interstellar” and “Arrival.” The posters have been receiving quite a bit of praise on the internet and after seeing them, we think you will agree, they are pretty cool and work very well as a set. Here is a look at her work along with a few words from Eileen about this self-initiated project.
BLURPPY: What is it about these 3 films that compelled you to create this first series?
SG POSTERS: Well, all these movies have something in common: they are great examples for intelligent sci fi with a very real human side to them. It’s not about guns or aliens or the loud action, it’s about the width of relationships and emotions. I had the idea to capture that width and the result was a series that focused on one little human silhouette surrounded by a big, impressive landscape with key elements from each movie. I do think these three films have lot more in common than it might seem at first and that’s why they work so well together.
BLURPPY: Do you have a favorite film from the 3 chosen and does that match up with which poster is your favorite?
SG Posters: I’ll have to say that Arrival is by far my favorite. It was one of the best movies I’ve seen in years and it left a great impression. If you haven’t seen it? Do it. Imagery, music, the story itself – it’s a masterpiece really. Poster-wise? It’s probably the Interstellar one though. The dramatic sky and the girl running towards the launching rocket is just a very very strong image and it was the first I did of these three actually.
BLURPPY: What’s your take regarding life on other planets?
SG Posters: There’s definitely something out there, there simply has to be. The universe is so so big, in my opinion it would be foolish to believe we’re alone. Aliens? Like the little green men? I’m not sure about that but who knows, right?
BLURPPY: I”m with you. I’ve believed in life in the Universe ever since my Dad took me to see “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” back in 1977. These posters have really garnered the loving attention of your fans. What would you like to say to them about this project?
SG Posters: Well, I’m very very grateful they got so much attention and love. I’m going to try to do a print run of these and let people know on my social media channels since I received quite a few questions about that. Also, I’d love to take this opportunity and ask people for perfect triples like these. I have a few ideas but I would love to hear what people think works well together. Could be fun!
BLURPPY: What were your tools of choice for these posters?
SG POSTERS: It’s 100% photoshop, I’ve worked with public domain imagery as well as stock images to create these amazing landscapes. Compared to other stuff I did these came along pretty fast (probably three to four hours over all) but that was maybe the excitement about the whole idea.
BLURPPY : Do you have anything coming up that you would like to tell or tease?
SG Posters: There’s going to be more of this series for sure. It’s just too much fun, so that’s one thing. Then there’s some official key art I’ve been working on and it’s going to be exciting to share that once I’m allowed to. Besides that I’m still working on my illustration skills, a field I definitely want to explore more.
